Dan Richters

I have this idea to do a series of character sketches. I want to highlight various people throughout the City of Omaha who are creating real impact; creatively, socially, intellectually and/or all of the above. Several people immediately come to mind, but a particularly modest gentleman seems to be the first in line.

Dan Richters is a storyteller extraordinaire. Pick a medium, any medium, and you will find him telling a story with it. Painting, clothing design, sculpture, writing, music, digital design, photography, etc.. The list goes on and on.

The fascinating thing about Richters’ work is that though the mediums may be endless, the story that is being told is very consistent. It is almost as if he is exploring every means possible to bring his own private universe alive. The colors, the textures, sounds, anything and everything is a means to the same end. Bring it alive. Make it real.

The effort and attention to detail that goes into his work is astonishing. Faithful to his vision, every detail is thought through and executed precisely. Even the fashion models coming down the runway wearing his clothing designs know the role that their “character” plays in the story that is not being told in words.

Richters has a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, however, much if not most of his skill is self developed. An insatiable passion for bringing his world to light has given him the motivation to keep exploring, learning and creating. It is the story that is primary, but proper execution and presentation of that story creates the need for mastery of technique.

The casual observer might make the mistake of thinking that the medium at hand is the passionate focus of the storyteller, not realizing that it is really the story that is essential. Richters’ work is an invitation, a journey into his world and by pressing into the work in its varied forms, the observer has an opportunity to hear the story that is being told.
